Kings XI Punjab thump Daredevils, stay in hunt for play-offs

Dharamsala: Paul Valthaty and Shaun Marsh starred with the bat while leggie Piyush Chawla took three wickets to set up a 29-run victory for Kings XI Punjab over the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League here Sunday to stay alive for the play-offs.

Kings XI Punjab, courtesy a 102-run stand by Valthaty (62) and Marsh (46), posted 170 for six and then their bowlers restricted the Daredevils to 141 for eight at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, which was hosting its first match of the fourth IPL season.

Chawla (3/16) produced career-best figures in the tournament as he turned the ball on a pitch that also offered steep bounce to the fast bowlers.

The win here was Punjab's third successive and kept them in hunt for the play-offs. They have now moved to fifth place in the table with 12 points from 12 matches. Daredevils, already out of the competition, are at the bottom with eight points from 13 matches.

Daredevils were off to a decent start with Naman Ojha (28) and David Warner (29) sharing 52 runs for the first wicket. But the visitors lost their way after the openers departed in quick succession.

The asking rate kept mounting and the absence of Virender Sehwag was dearly felt. The Daredevils lost six of their batsmen inside 100 runs and never looked like overcoming a stiff target.

The Kings XI, put into bat, amassed 100 runs in the last 10 overs.

With Valthaty and Marsh clearing boundaries at ease, anywhere near 200 looked a real possibility.

In Image: Delhi Daredevils David Warner plays a stroke

They got the measure of the difficult wicket and then took the long handle to smash the Delhi bowlers all over the park. They were helped by some sloppy fielding from the opposition who missed run outs and dropped catches at key moments.

Valthaty was given a life on 13 as Venugopal Rao dropped a regulation catch at first slip off Morkel in the fourth over. The Mumbai-based batsman made most of the opportunity and went on to score his second fifty of the tournament, pipping Chris Gayle (436 runs) along the way for the orange cap. Valthaty has 483 runs to his name in 12 games.

Marsh, too, was in full swing during his cracking 28-ball knock. The talented Australian hammered three sixes and two fours in Sridharan Sriram's first over and set the tone for a huge score.

Both, however, fell to Irfan Pathan (3-28) in the 15th over that helped Daredevils pull things back a bit, but eventually, not enough.

Kings XI Punjab beat Kochi Tuskers by six wickets

Dinesh Karthik smashed a quickfire 69 as Kings XI Punjab overcame initial and middle over stutter to thump Kochi Tuskers Kerala by six wickets to keep themselves in contention for a play-off berth in the Indian Premier League here today.

Chasing a stiff 179, KXIP made a struggling start with openers Paul Valthaty (17) and Adam Gilchrist (9) falling cheaply inside five overs for just 31 runs before Karthik and Shaun Marsh (42) helping their side win the match with seven balls to spare with a 111-run third-wicket stand in 9.3 overs.

David Hussey (21 not out from 15 balls) finished the run chase in style with a six off Ravindra Jadeja as KXIP reached 181 for four in 18.5 overs to take his side to their fifth win in 11 matches.

Karthik smashed seven fours and five sixes in his 33-ball knock while Marsh hit five fours and two sixes from 30 balls to set up the win on a batting-friendly pitch at the Holkar Stadium which was hosting the first IPL match.

Pacer R P Singh grabbed a superb 4/25 to threaten to win the match for KTK but the KXIP batsmen were up to the task.

In Image: Kings XI Punjab batsman Dinesh Karthik celebrates his half-century

With the win today, KXIP remained in contention for a play-off berth as they jumped to sixth spot with 10 points with three matches remaining.

KTK, on the other hand, were virtually knocked out of the tournament with 10 points from 12 matches. They have two matches remaining.

The KXIP opening stand yielded just 25 runs in 2.5 overs with Valthaty falling victim to R P Singh after making a promising start, hitting two sixes in consecutive balls in the third over.

Valthaty's middle stump was knocked off as the ball went through the gap between bat and pad. The KXIP opener, who faced 10 balls and hit a four and two sixes, failed once again after promising a lot early in the tournament.

Gilchrist, who was struggling in his 15-ball stay, departed with a soft dismissal as he holed out to Parthiv Patel and KXIP were 31 for two in the fifth over when he left.

In Image: Kings XI Punjab batsman and team captain Adam Gilchrist (L) run along with his teammate Shaun Marsh (R) between the wickets

One-down Marsh and Karthik, who came in at the fall of Gilchrist, however, revived the innings with a century-plus stand for the third wicket.

Marsh hit three fours in the sixth over bowled by S Sreesanth as KXIP were 49 for two after the first power play. Karthik then smote Vinay Kumar for a six and a four in consecutive balls.

Marsh and Karthik took calculated risk to find the boundaries as KXIP reached 84 for two at the halfway mark. The in-form Australian put the pressure on opposition side with two sixes off compatriot Brad Hodge in the 12th over with one sailing inches above a leaping Sreesanth as KXIP took 19 runs from that over.

As if competing each other, Karthik then reached to his third IPL fifty with a six off Jadeja and then followed it up next ball with another hit for maximum result to take 16 runs from the 13th over and bring down the asking rate to less than seven per over.

Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Daredevils by 18 runs

Chennai: Mahendra Singh Dhoni sent the bowlers on a leatherhunt as Chennai Super Kings kept their unbeaten record at Chepauk intact with a comfortable 18-run victory over Delhi Daredevils in a 12th round IPL encounter today.

Dhoni smashed his way to an unbeaten 63 off only 31 balls (5x4, 4x6) and along with an equally effective Subramanium Badrinath (55) guided CSK to a formidable 176 for four in 20 overs. With no Virender Sehwag in their line-up, the target was virtually impossible for Daredevils to chase as they managed only 158 for six in 20 overs.

Irfan Pathan scored an unbeaten 46 but that was never going to be enough.

With this win CSK notched up their eighth win in the competition and stretched their unbeaten streak at home to six matches.

The match will however be remembered for the contrasting half-centuries by Dhoni and Badrinath as they added 96 runs for the fourth wicket in only 9.2 overs.

In Image: Chennai Super Kings fielder Dwayne Bravo (R) celebrates with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (L) after catching out Delhi Daredevils batsman Colin Ingram

Dhoni clobbered the Daredevils bowlers racing his way to a 28-ball half century. He finished with a flourish hitting Irfan Pathan for consecutive sixes off his final two deliveries. The exhibition of clean hitting reminded one and all Dhoni of the old who had the penchant for taking on the bowlers straightaway.

On the otherhand, Badrinath (55, 43 balls, 6x4, 1x6) who is almost a certainty to board the flight to Caribbean did his reputation no harm as he played with lot of precision rotating the strike and punishing the loose deliveries.

The final two overs yielded 37 runs while CSK scored 109 runs off the last 10 overs having scored 67 from the first 10.

For Daredevils who erred by selecting five pacers on a slow track, Ajit Agarkar turned out to be the most expensive bowler leaking 49 runs from four overs while Pathan gave away 40 from his four.

In Image: Mahendra Singh Dhoni plays a shot

Dhoni started off with a pulled boundary off Ajit Agarkar and then launched into Andrew McDonald for straight six and then helped himself with a boundary. Both Dhoni and Badrinath ran the singles and twos well as they waited for the loose balls.

When Agarkar came back for his second spell, he played an audacious pull-shot and followed it up with a deft scoop past the short fine leg.

The Indian captain moved into the 40's when patted statemate Varun Aaron's full-toss straight past the bowler.

The best stroke however remained a lofted shot off Agarkar over extra cover that brought up his second six.

With an able ally in Badrinath who was wise enough to rotate the strike, Dhoni ensured that his side put up another commendable score on a slow Chepauk track.

Kings XI stay in play-off hunt with upset win over Mumbai

Munaf Patel's five-wicket haul went in vain as table toppers Mumbai Indians produced a spineless batting display to slump to a humiliating 76-run defeat at the hands of Kings XI Punjab in an Indian Premier League match here today.
Chasing a challenging 164-run target, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for just 87 runs in 12.5 overs at the Punjab Cricket Association ground.
Young left-arm spinner Bharghav Bhatt was the pick of the Kings XI bowlers, scalping four wickets for 22 runs while Praveen Kumar returned picked up two wickets for 19.
Mumbai's lacklustre batting performance can be gauged from the fact that big-hitting Kieron Pollard was their top-scored with 17 runs followed by Aiden Blizzard (15).
Image: Bhargav Bhatt of Kings XI Punjab reacts as he claims his fourth wicket and wraps up the Mumbai Indians' innings during an Indian Premier League cricket match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in Chandigarh, India, Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Kings XI Punjab won by 76 runs.

Earlier, Munaf produced his first five-wicket haul of the tournament as Kings XI Punjab lost the plot after an impressive start to be eventually restricted to 163 for eight.
Sent into bat, Kings XI were coasting at 129 for two at one stage but lost as many as six wickets in a span of just 39 runs in the last five overs to see their innings go haywire from a comfortable position.
Munaf was the wrecker in chief for Mumbai, picking up five wickets for just 21 runs while tournament's highest wicket-taker Lasith Malinga gave him the perfect support from the other end with figures of two for 24.
Shaun Marsh top-scored for Kings XI with a 34-ball 43 while Dinesh Karthik (31 off 24), captain Adam Gilchrist (28) and Paul Valthaty (14) all got starts before fading out.
Image: Mumbai Indians' players celebrate with Munaf Patel, center facing camera, after Patel claimed five wickets during an Indian Premier League cricket match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in Mohali, India, Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

The win not only took Kings XI up to the ninth position in the standings with eight points from 10 games, but also kept alive their hopes of making it to the play-offs.
Despite the defeat, Mumbai continue to lead the table with 16 points from 11 matches. Mumbai's chase was far from rosy as they lost their top six batsmen inside the first 10 overs with the scoreboard reading just 63.
Blizzard, however, got Mumbai off to a blazing start spanking Praveen for three consecutive fours to pile up 12 runs of the first over before the pacer picked up two vital wickets to send the visitors onto the backfoot. Captain Sachin Tendulkar (6) was Praveen's first casualty as he steered one to Marsh at backward point in the third over.
Left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma then accounted for Rohit Sharma in the next over with Gilchrist producing a smart glove work and then a over later Praveen picked up his second victim -- Blizzard caught behind the stumps by the Kings XI skipper.
Image: Shaun Marsh of Kings XI Punjab hits a ball during an Indian Premier League cricket match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in Mohali, India, Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Mumbai's misery was further compounded when Andrew Symonds was run out for eight, courtesy an unnecessary mix up with Ambati Rayudu.
If that was not enough, in-form Rayudu and Tirumalasetti Suman were the next to go in a span of four deliveries. Harbhajan Singh and big-hitting Kieron Pollard rode on some luck before they too perished in search of big shots.
From there on defeat was inevitable for Mumbai and it was just a matter of time before Bhatt sealed the match in favour of the home team with three wickets -- Pollard, Dhawal Kulkarni and Munaf -- in the 13th over.
Earlier, it was a miserable batting performance from the Kings XI middle and lower order with just the top four registering double figures. Asked to bat, Kings XI lost Valthaty early for a run-a-ball 14. He was caught by Blizzard at deep mid-wicket off Munaf in the third over.

Ganguly shines on comeback as Pune beat Deccan by six wickets

Veteran Sourav Ganguly silenced his critics by marking his belated return to the Indian Premier League with a gutsy batting display as Pune Warriors notched up a comfortable six-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers here today.
The 38-year-old Ganguly remained unbeaten on 32 off as many balls as Pune, after being asked to bowl first, achieved the target with 10 balls to spare.
After Mitchell Marsh helped Warriors restrict the hosts to 136 for eight with impressive figures of four for 25, Manish Pandey was unlucky to miss a well-deserved half century by a run but did enough to pave the way for his team's victory.
Equally impressive was Pandey's opening partner Jesse Ryder, who made a hurricane 35 of 20 deliveries.
Image: Pune Warriors India cricketer Sourav Ganguly, left, and Callum Ferguson celebrate their team's victory during an Indian Premier League cricket match against Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad, India, Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

But it was Ganguly who stole the limelight with a fluent unbeaten knock which contained three boundaries and a six.
In a match that generated interest as well as anticipation for the former India skipper's return to the highly popular tournament, Ganguly strode to the crease at the fall of opener Ryder's wicket.
In the company of Pandey who was just two years old when Ganguly made his international debut way back in the Australian summer of 1991, the experienced left-hander proved a point or two to all those who ignored him during the IPL auction in January.
A run-a-ball innings after a long lay-off was par for the course.
That he made those runs with the help of three boundaries and a massive six off Mishra over deep square-leg, only goes on to show that he still has it in him to play in the league.
Image: Pune Warriors' cricketer Jesse Ryder plays a shot, as Deccan Chargers' Kumar Sangakkara looks on during an Indian Premier League cricket match in Hyderabad, India, Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Chasing a modest 137 for their fourth victory in the tournament, Pune rode on Ryder's enterprise and Pandey's controlled aggression to race to fifty in just six overs.
Slow left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha broke the opening partnership by having Ryder bowled, but not before the burly New Zealander smashed five boundaries and two sixes.
Even as all eyes were on Ganguly, Pandey managed to play an innings which was as important as the one played by Ryder.
Boundaries came in thick and fast and there was no stopping the duo till Ryder went for that wild heave.
Skipper Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa didn't last long enough as they were snared by Daniel Christian, but that hardly mattered.
Image: The bails fly off the wicket to dismiss Pune Warriors' cricketer Yuvraj Singh during an Indian Premier League cricket match against Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad, India, Tuesday, May 10, 2011.

Marsh bowled with purpose after Deccan skipper Kumar Sangakkara elected to bat.
The Warriors did not get off to a good start as Chargers openers Shikhar Dhawan and DB Ravi Teja raised a half-century stand in six overs to set the tone for a competitive total.
But clever bowling coupled with some mindless batting helped the Warriors fight back into the match.
Besides Marsh, Yuvraj picked up two wickets including that of Dhawan, the team's first breakthrough.
Marsh and the other bowlers' efforts ensured that Dhawan and Ravi Teja's brisk start is wasted.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a tight first over conceding just four runs but, in the following over, Ravi Teja cut and drove Shrikant Wagh for two successive boundaries to make it run-a-ball.

Chennai Super Kings outplay Rajasthan Royals by 63 runs

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's brutal assault and Murali Vijay's brisk fifty was backed up by some sensible bowling as Chennai Super Kings outplayed Rajasthan Royals by 63 runs in their Indian Premier League match here today.
After Chennai rode on Dhoni's onslaught towards the end to post a formidable 196 for three, the bowlers led by Doug Bollinger's three for 22, bundled out Rajasthan for 133 to more or less seal a play-off berth.
With seven wins from 11 matches, Chennai are now second with 14 points.
Apart from Dhoni's 19-ball 41, Michael Hussey (46 of 30) and Suresh Raina (43 off 27), too, impressed with their innovative strokeplay after Vijay laid the platform with a blazing 53 off 40 balls after rival skipper Shane Warne put the visitors in.
During his brief stay at the wicket, Dhoni smashed three sixes and as many fours.
Image: Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni bats during an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur, India, Monday, May 9, 2011.

While Vijay scored two fours and three sixes, Hussey hit eight boundaries. Raina found the fence six times. Ajinkya Rahane top-scored for the hosts with an entertaining 52 off 36 balls.
Chasing a mammoth target, Rajasthan needed a flying start but neither Shane Watson nor Rahul Dravid lasted enough.
If the early dismissals of the two openers were not enough, Rajasthan were dealt a telling blow when Albie Morkel accounted for the dangerous Ross Taylor. Barring Taylor, the batsmen that followed the openers lacked experience of playing under pressure, but Rahane proved to be an exception.
The hosts were in the doldrums at 70 for four in the 10th over and while he could not really threaten the Chennai outfit, Rahane, one can say, tried to save Rajasthan from embarrassment in front of the home crowd.
Image: Chennai Super Kings Murli Vijay acknowledges the crowd after his half century during an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur, India, Monday, May 9, 2011

During his stay at the crease, Rahane played some effective as well as beautiful shots that for a brief while, revived hopes of a turnaround.
Rahane made his intention clear by hitting Dwayne Bravo for two consecutive boundaries in the fifth over of the innings. The cut in front of point, which raced to the boundary in no time, was a treat to watch.
Rahane then swept Ravichandran Ashwin past short fine leg, but the bowler fought back stongly to signal the end of Watson three deliveries later.
Trying to go for a sweap to a tossed-up ball, Watson only managed a top edge, which Shadab Jataki accepted, though after a fumble. A couple of quiet overs later, Morkel removed Taylor with a full, widish delivery.
Image: Rajasthan Royals Ajinkya Rahane bats during an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur, India, Monday, May 9, 2011.

The hosts slipped further as Ashwin had Ashok Menaria caught behind with a slow and a short-of-a-length delivery.
Rahane, at the other hand, found the ropes with ease as Rajasthan trotted towards the 100-run mark. It took a brilliant catch from Raina at long-on to bring to an end Rahane's innings, much to the disappointment of the home fans.
Abhishek Raut smashed a six and a four before running himself out and after that, Chennai completed the formality without fuss. Earlier, Hussey kicked off the Chennai innings with a swept boundary in the very first ball of the match at the Sawai Mansingh stadium.
Both Hussey and Vijay found the ropes with alarming regularity as Chennai crossed the 50-run mark in the sixth over.

Pune Warriors thrash KXIP by 5 wickets

Mohali: Pune Warriors finally had reason to smile as they snapped their seven-match losing streak by defeating an equally desperate Kings XI Punjab by five wickets in a low-scoring Indian Premier League match, here today.
With hardly any chance to make the play-off stage, the two bottom-placed teams were playing for pride and the Yuvraj Singh-led Warriors badly needed a win as the story of their humiliation was getting worse with defeat after defeat.
Pune bowlers scripted the win by putting up an outstanding effort as they restricted Punjab to a meagre 119 for eight after the hosts opted to bat first at PCA stadium.
The visitors then chased the small target with 2.5 overs to spare. Skipper Yuvarj Singh led the team to win with a fiery 35-run knock off 15 balls.
In Image: Callum Ferguson of Pune Warriors is all smiles as his team ends up on the winning side after seven consecutive defeats as they won against Kings XI Punjab

Manish Pandey (28) and Jesse Ryder (15) provided Warriors a decent, if not spectacular start, by raising a quick 32 runs but like the Punjab batsmen, they too squandered starts.
Bhargav Bhatt got rid of Ryder and Robin Uthappa (22) also fell after getting a start but Yuvraj ensured that their side do not lose way this time around.
Yuvraj hammered Bhatt for two sixes and two fours in the 15th over, which earned them 22 runs and got out while trying to finish the game in a hurry.
Pune, surprisingly, yet again chose not to include former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who was expected to play his first match of the season-IV today.
In Image: Robin Uthappa of Pune Warriors plays a shot

Earlier, leg-spinner Rahul Sharma yet again returned exceptional figures as he gave away just 17 runs in his four overs and began the Punjab slide by dismissing openers -- Adam Gilchrist (3) and Paul Valthaty (23).
Paceman Wayne Parnell (2/12) also did extremely well as he was the most economical bowler, conceding just 12 runs in his quota of four overs and also struck two blows.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/14) and Mitchell Marsh (2/12) all took two wickets apiece.
Pune have moved to eighth in the points table from 10th while Punjab, who suffered their fifth defeat in a row, are now languishing at the bottom.
Shaun Marsh (32), Dinesh Karthik (30) and Valthaty got starts but could not convert them into big knocks for the hosts.
In Image: Shaun Marsh of the Kings XI Punjab plays a shot

Punjab kept losing wickets and never had a partnership going. The 30-run stand between Karthik and Marsh was the best and credit goes to some disciplined bowling by Pune bowlers.
Valthaty tried to play sensibly today as he did not go blindly for his shots and waited for the punishable balls. His first four boundaries, three coming in Shrikanth Wagh's first over, were all powerful yet elegant cover drives.
But Valthaty's opening partner and skipper Adam Gilchrist (3) came a cropper yet again as in-form leg-spinner Rahul Sharma had him caught at deep mid-wicket.

Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Daredevils by 32 runs

Mumbai: Dishing out another superlative all-round performance, Mumbai Indians crushed Delhi Daredevils by 32 runs to virtually qualify for the the play-offs of the Indian Premier League here today.
The win at the Wankhede Stadium meant Mumbai are back at the top of the leaderboard with 16 points from 10 games and have virtually booked a berth in the last four stage of the Twenty20 tournament.
On the contrary, the loss has knocked Delhi out of the the May 24-25 play-off race and are languishing at the seventh position with eight points from 11 matches.
In Image: Mumbai Indians' Kieron Pollard and Sachin Tendulkar, right, celebrate their team's victory over Delhi Daredevils

Invited to bat first, Mumbai rode on a blazing start provided by Aiden Blizzard, who blasted 37 in 23 balls, besides a belligerent 56-ball 87-run third wicket partnership between Ambati Rayudu (59) and Rohit Sharma (49) to post an imposing 178 for four.
Faced with the huge task of chasing the stiff score, Delhi batsmen buckled under pressure and were tottering at seven for four in the third over before they recovered through an 87-run partnership between top-scorer James Hopes (56) and Y Venugopal Rao (37).
But it was not enough as Mumbai shot out the visitors for 146 in 19.5 overs to suffer their seventh defeat in 11 games.
It was yet another clinically efficient bowling display by Mumbai, who choked the Delhi dashers by packing off David Warner, rival captain Virender Sehwag, Colin Ingram and Naman Ojha within the first three overs.
In Image: Mumbai Indians' Ambati Rayudu in action

After Harbhajan Singh dismissed Warner off the fifth ball of the innings, Delhi soon slumped to seven for four.
The visitors lost Ingram to Lasith Malinga's unplayable yorker before Munaf Patel sent off Ojha and Sehwag, to virtually seal off Delhi's escape route.
The partial revival was led by Hopes, dropped at long leg by Munaf Patel off Malinga when on 23. He faced 44 balls en route to his fifty and struck eight fours before he was run out in the 17th over following a mix-up with Irfan Pathan.
His fifth wicket partner Rao hit four fours and a six in his 27-ball knock before he was bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni in the 14th over when the Daredevils were on 94.
Pathan made 23 off 18 balls and briefly threatened to take his team past the stiff target before he was yorked by Malinga in the 18th over when Delhi required 51 runs which virtually ended their hopes.
Malinga, Munaf, Harbhajan and Kieron Pollard grabbed two wickets apiece for Mumbai, who clash with Kings XI Punjab on May 10 at Mohali while the Daredevils play against defending champions Chennai Super Kings on May 12 at the latter's backyard.
In Image: The bails fly off the wicket to dismiss Delhi Daredevils' Colin Ingram, bowled out by Lasith Malinga

Earlier, Blizzard blasted eight fours after singling out Morne Morkel for a harsh treatment by hitting the South African pacer for five fours in an over.
Blizzard and Tendulkar (14) put on 50 runs in 29 balls for the opening stand and the fine beginning was later sustained by Rayudu (59) and Sharma (49).
Rayudu cracked two sixes and three four in -ball essay while Sharma struck three huge sixes and two fours in his 32-ball blitz after Delhi captain Virender Sehwag won the toss and opted to field in their must-win clash.
Mumbai scored 49 runs in the last five overs and 102 in the last 10.
Blizzard simply tore apart Morkel after playing three dot balls off the first three balls he faced from the lanky South African fast bowler.

Unbelievable knock from Sehwag keeps Delhi in the hunt

Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag singlehandedly demolished Deccan Chargers bowlers with a blistering century to guide his team to a four-wicket victory in an IPL match here today.
Chasing a stiff target of 176, Sehwag took the Chargers attack to the cleaners scoring 119 from only 56 balls with the help of 13 fours and five sixes as his teammates had little contribution in the winning cause.
With eight points, Daredevils stay in the hunt for Play-offs as it was curtains for Chargers who looked favourites till Sehwag struck like a tornado.
It was one of the most scintillating innings that one would have ever witnessed as Sehwag took it upon himself to accomplish what looked like Mission Impossible after Daredevils were reduced to 25 for three.
Image: Delhi Daredevils batsman Virender Sehwag, celebrates his fifty during an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match against Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad, India, Thursday, May 5, 2011.

Fortune favours the brave and Sehwag got a couple respite due to sloppy fielding from the home team that saw couple of catches being dropped. There couldn't have been a better birthday gift for his younger son than a blazing century.
Finally, when he was out in the 17th over, even the Chargers players came upto congratulate him.
Dale Styen in right earnest removing Aaron Finch (0) off the very second delivery while Ishant Sharma quickly removed Naman Ojha (7) and Venugopal Rao (3) to reduce Daredevils to 25 for three. But little did one know that what was in store after that.
Sehwag was unusually quiet during the first seven overs. It was inexperienced Ishan Malhotra who became an easy prey. The moment he was brought into the attack, Sehwag whipped him over fine leg for a six followed it up with another over mid-wicket. Then he hit consecutive boundaries through deep mid-wicket and straight past the bowler. 23 runs came off the eight over.
Image: Delhi Daredevils batsmen James Hopes, right, and Yogesh Nagar walk towards pavilion after winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match against Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad, India, Thursday, May 5, 2011.

The next over from Daniel Christian saw Sehwag hit couple of more boundaries. When Amit Mishra was introduced, he launched into him to hit over long for a six. It brought up his 50 from 27 balls and also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in the ongoing tourney.
The very next delivery from Mishra saw Sehwag trying to hit over mid-wicket but the ball flew at a catchable height to Ankit Sharma at sweeper cover who bungled big time.
There was no end to Mishra's misery as in the next over Sehwag hit one straight to long-off which Ravi Teja not only spilled but also let it cross the boundary ropes as it brought up Delhi's 100.
From overs 8-12, Daredevils scored 75 runs in five overs as Sehwag butchered the bowlers. With no option left, Sangakkara brought on his best bowler Steyn who was slashed through point and then guided through the fine-leg region for two boundaries.

Chennai Super Kings cruise to a eight-wicket win over Royals

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings rode on a 137-run partnership between Michael Hussey and Suresh Raina to defeat the Rajasthan Royals and maintain their unbeaten record at home this season.
After restricting the Royals to 147 for six, Raina (61, 51 balls, 3x4, 1x6) and Hussey (79 not out, 55 balls, 8x4, 1x6) didn't face problems from RR bowlers during their century partnership.
When Raina was finally dismissed, CSK were just three short of a win.
Earlier, the star performer for the Royals with the bat was Rahul Dravid top scoring with a fluent 66 (51 balls, 10 fours).

Though Chennai's chase got off to a rocky start, with local boy Murali Vijay being rapped on the pads in the second over off Johan Botha, in-form Hussey and Raina, who seemed to have got back the touch that had deserted him for some time steadily shepherded the team to victory.
The duo showcased a commendable mixture of caution with aggression as they rotated the strike as well as dispatched the loose deliveries to the boundary.
Hussey registered his fourth half century of the tournament while Raina got his second one on trot.
The highlight of their partnership was the running between the wickets as they easily converted ones into twos and twos into threes.

Rajasthan's cause was not helped by sloppy fielding that saw three overthrows and at least one chance to run out Raina go a begging.
Raina was on 47 then and a wicket could have put pressure on CSK at that critical juncture. While Raina repeatedly clipped the ball to third man during his knock, Hussey played shots all round the ground. A six and a four off left-arm spinner Nayan Doshi was the highlight of his innings.
With 327 runs, Hussey has moved up in the list to be among the top two run-getters with Sachin Tendulkar leading the pack. Fittingly, he finished off the match with a cross batted pull to midwicket off Siddharth Trivedi.
But things looked starkly different for Chennai earlier in the day, when the Royals threatened to pile up a huge score raking up 81 runs in the first 10 overs of their innings.

However the next 10 overs saw only 66 runs being added with CSK bowlers claiming six wickets in the bargain. Dravid played fluently before holing out to deep midwicket off Suraj Randiv trying to up the ante.
The other significant contributor was his opening partner Watson, who made 32 (26 balls, 5x4). Watson was an ideal foil for Dravid, but none of the other batsmen crossed 20.
CSK coach Stephen Fleming had said before the Royals match that though his side are unbeaten at home, each of those matches was a scrap, and this was no exception. Outclassed in the first ten overs, CSK bounced back in the second half of the match, refusing to let their heads drop and bowling a probing length.
It earned dividends, as most of the Royals players threw their wickets away after the opening stand of 81 had been broken.

Mumbai back to top after outplaying Warriors

Mumbai Indians reclaimed the top spot in the points table after thumping a hapless Pune Warriors by 21 runs in their Indian Premier League clash at Dr D Y Patil Sports Academy here today.
Mumbai Indians posted a challenging 160 for seven after being invited to bat as T Suman blazed his way to a 16-ball 36 and Pollard played a useful 29-run cameo towards the end to help the side recover from a sluggish start.
Backed by some disciplined bowling and inspiring fielding, Mumbai then restricted the Warriors to 139 for seven to record their seventh win in nine matches.
The Warriors slumped to seventh defeat in a row and they need a miracle of sorts to make the play-offs. Their last win had come on April 13 at this ground when they had defeated Kochi Tuskers Kerala by four wickets.

Lasith Malinga (3/25) was the most successful bowler for Mumbai while Harbhajan Singh (1/17), Munaf Patel (1/30) and Kieron Pollard (1/36) all took one wicket apeice.
Warriors were never in the chase after losing Jesse Ryder off the very first ball of the innings from Harbhajan Singh, though Manish Pandey (59) fought a losing battle from one end.
Pandey, who knock came off 47 balls, and Robin Uthappa (34 unbeaten off 26) were the only batsmen who resisted the formidable Mumbai attack but their effort could only reduce the defeat margin.
Pune skipper Yuvraj Singh (20) sizzled for a while, hitting two sixes and a four during his short stay at the crease, but was undone by a brilliant bouncer by Malinga and an equally good catch by Munaf in the third-man region.

Earlier, Mumbai had managed just 65 runs for two wickets after 10 overs but found an unlikely hero in Suman, who hit three sixes and as many fours to lead the fightback.
Pollard played a useful cameo (29 off 21), with two fours and as many sixes to help Mumbai go past the 150-run mark.
Pune bowlers had done an exceptional job early on and leg-spinner Rahul Sharma returend incredible figures of 4-0-7-2 but the good work was undone when Suman and Pollard had their way.
Yuvraj accounted for Mumbai's most productive duo of skipper Sachin Tendulkar (24) and Ambati Rayudu (27).

As in earlier games, the opening partnership did not yield too many runs for Mumbai as the new partner for skipper Tendulkar, Australian youngster Aiden Blizzard (6) perished in the third over to leave them at 18 for one.
The left-handed batsman was caught by a diving stumper Robin Uthappa in front of the slip fielder. But Tendulkar was in very good touch as he drove and clipped Alfonso Thomas and Shrikant Wagh for three fours in the first two overs.
Once again it was left to the Tendulkar and Rayudu to forge a meaningful stand.
Rayudu hooked West Indies pacer Jerome Taylor and then glided the bowler over the head of wicket keeper for successive fours to step up the run rate.
Tendulkar then glanced and top-edged left-arm Wagh for successive fours to help Mumbai finish the power-play with 49 on board.

Mumbai produce all round show to stop Punjab

Mumbai Indians bounced back in splendid fashion after a loss in their previous game by beating Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs and regain the pole position in the Indian Premier League here today.
Batting first, half centuries from skipper Sachin Tendulkar and Ambati Rayudu helped them score a competitive 159 for five in 20 overs. The MI bowlers then did a fine job in restricting the visitors to 136 for eight despite valiant effort from Shaun Marsh who scored 61 off just 47 balls.
Barring a fine innings from Marsh, who struck eight fours, and his 72-run second wicket partnership in 60 balls with opener Paul Valthaty (33 in 38 balls), there was little of note in the Kings XI chase resulting in their fourth defeat in seven matches.

For home team, Harbhajan Singh – who opened the attack – grabbed two for 25 along with Lasith Malinga (two for 19) and Munaf Patel (two for 18).
Man of the match Kieron Pollard, who made a brisk 20 in 11 balls and took two catches, and Andrew Symonds also grabbed a wicket each.
Earlier, asked to bat first Tendulkar and Rayudu added 95 runs in 72 balls for the second wicket to guide MI to a winning score.
While Rayudu was the more aggressive of the duo and got his runs in 37 balls with eight fours and one six, Tendulkar struck a six and three fours in his 45-ball essay.

Both were caught in the deep trying to give a charge to the KXIP bowlers.
Later, Kieron Pollard, who has hardly got a chance to bat in earlier matches, made a quick-fire 20 with two sixes and a four. Rohit Sharma made a quick 18 in 11 balls before falling off the penultimate ball.
Andrew Symonds (4) remained unconquered at the end with T Suman (0) who did not face a ball.
For the visitors, leg spinner Piyush Chawla and medium pacer Ryan Harris grabbed two wickets each while left-arm slow bowler Bipul Sharma accounted for the other wicket.

When Punjab chased, Mumbai too, like their rivals had done, commenced the bowling with Harbhajan Singh and the move succeeded. The offie trapped Gilchrist leg before when the left hander tried to sweep the bowler.
The fifth ball strike with only one run on the board put Kings XI on the back foot, but the home team suffered a setback when Rayudu was injured while fielding, appearing to have twisted his right knee. He later came back to keep wickets after first-choice stumper Davy Jacobs suffered a thumb injury and had to leave the field.
Shaun Marsh struck the first boundary of the innings by clipping Malinga off his toes and then punched the Lankan bowler through the covers off the very next delivery for his second four.
Valthaty was lucky to see his leading edge not held at point by Munaf Patel off Abu Nechim Ahmed when on three in a score of 16 for one.
